The Democrats relentlessly proclaim that Emperor Trump is destroying our democracy. And they are absolutely right – he is a bombastic, lawless, demented, juvenile wannabe dictator. But that message alone won’t win back Congress in 2026 or the Whitehouse in 2028! It doesn’t resonate with the multitudes struggling to stay healthy and employed, pay the rent, and keep ever more expensive food on the table. Sure, democracy has always been there, but it’s not something they “feel” in their everyday lives; nor do they perceive how its demise would make their existence even more tenuous. Democracy per se is not a pocketbook or immediate lifestyle issue, so “saving” it is unlikely to motivate them to vote Democratic, or even vote at all.
The national Democratic leadership does not seem to comprehend this situation. Nearly a year after a devastating election loss, there’s little evidence that they understand why they lost so badly, or what to do about it. Why did they lose their traditional constituencies? Why does the party poll even lower than Trump? So far their message is still fundamentally anti-Trump. Where is the positive message that “we can do better, much better”, and here’s what we want to implement if givenback control. Not just undo Trump’s destruction, but change course to update the government to be fairer and more effective.
To paraphrase the late JFK, it’s now “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for Donald Trump”. That has to change; and it can only happen in the nation’s voting booths. So far, the Democrats have yet to come up with a resonating message that will convince enough people to get out and vote for them, not just against Trump and his congressional stooges.
