The Uncertainty of America’s Next Inauguration Day
The thought of Inauguration Day for the next President of the United States takes my breath away! It will come, I know. Will I live to see it? Will we have free elections leading up to it? Will the Democratic Party control one or both Houses of Congress? Such questions rush upon me when I begin to contemplate this question.
Can America Return to the Old Order?
One thought keeps nagging at me: Even with the best outcome, can we return to the Status Quo Ante? Can we restore the Old Order by just rescinding Trump’s Executive Orders or by reassuring our former Allies that what they experienced during the last four years will not be repeated? I think not. Whatever happens next, must take stock of the “bad dream” that we have all lived through.
Understanding the Appeal of the MAGA Movement
What President Trump did was to use democratic means to build a coalition of voters who felt that the United States had drifted too far to the left and that their grip on political power was being threatened. Their worries included the economy, illegal immigration, growing racial diversity, gay rights, legal abortion and technological change. As the map of the US showed a red center with both coasts outlined in blue, Republicans asked, “Is the American heartland fly-over territory, or can we wrest power from those “liberal politicians?”
What Democrats Should Consider Moving Forward
In addition to mounting their best effort to win the 2028 elections, American Democrats need to look at the MAGA agenda and try to make whatever adaptations they can in good conscience.
Reconnect With the American Heartland
We are the United States of America. The Heartland is not “fly-over” country.
Balance Professionalism and Human Connection
We will try to balance “professionalism” with consideration of relational skills when making appointments.
Reform Immigration Policy
We will make reforms in immigration policy, emphasizing background checks, while creating an efficient path to citizenship.
Choose Humanity in the Age of AI
Like John Henry, we will choose Man over Machine, in this emerging Age of AI.
Expand Educational Opportunity
We will open a path to education for all who can contribute to our future growth and do our best to eliminate barriers that too often have blocked that potential in the past.
