I Urge you, Mr. President
I urge you Mr. President to support America’s efforts over the last 80 years to promote and ensure justice and opportunity to all people.
I urge you to reinstitute the offices that implement DEI policies and to rescind Trumps Executive orders: 13950, 14148,14151,14173.
DEIA as a Foundation of Democracy
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Accessibility are the foundation blocks of our democracy. We know that millions died in WW II , fighting against exclusion, discrimination and injustice. After the war, leaders took action to create laws that would ensure equality and equity.
Key Milestones in Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity
1948 — an executive order by President Truman: desegregated the military and mandated equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed service.
1954 — In Brown vs. Board of Education the Supreme Court ruled segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.
1957 — The Civil Rights Act established the Civil Rights Division within the Department of Justice.
1961 — President Kennedy issued an Executive Order 10925 introducing affirmative action and created the Presidents Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity.
1990 — Americans with Disabilities Act
1991 — Civil Rights Act
The list goes on and on.
The Ongoing Struggle to Uphold Democratic Values
There have been mighty efforts against fearful odds to implement the values that all Americans hold sacred as found in the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and the 14th amendment.
However, since President Trump’s second term in office, he has dismantled DEIA policies and anti discrimination protections in public and private institutions. Up to this point he has issued four Executive orders. One states that the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Office of Personnel Management shall coordinate the termination of all discriminatory programs including “the illegal DEI.” His orders have caused wide-spread confusion in all public and private institutions, particularly affecting public schools and universities. Over 175 U.S Colleges dismantled or restructured DEI offices, literally closing many departments.
A Call to Restore and Strengthen DEIA
Therefore, Mr. President, the principles of our democracy have been challenged and attacked. It is imperative that you rescind President Trumps executive orders and put your effort into promoting and strengthening DEIA.
